A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity [1]. It contains all the hereditary information for development and reproduction. It is made up of DNA, and it provides information for the production of proteins. If there are mutations with the gene, it will impact the protein production and further affect cell function. Optic atrophy type 1 results from the mutation within the OPA1 gene, as it misshapen the mitochondria and affect the function of optical ganglion cells. By research regarding gene ontology, transcriptomics, and chemical genetics, scientists get to understand a specific genetic disease to a deeper level, further identify potential therapeutical approaches.
